Twice imprisoned, widely traveled, and acquainted with the leading scientific and philosophical minds of his day, Voltaire led as storied a life as the hero of his most popular work, Candide. This program, titled “Voltaire’s Candide,” recounts the story of Voltaire’s life with readings from Candide and dramatic vocal and instrumental works from Voltaire’s lifetime.
Pentimenti takes its name from “pentimento,” the original drawing or painting that is then overpainted when the artist takes a new direction. Revealing new layers or original insights inspires our artists for this retelling of a story now perhaps best known through Leonard Bernstein’s operetta Candide. Grammy award-winning tenor Aaron Sheehan joins Tucson favorite Kathryn Mueller, with John Lenti described as “a joy to behold” by the Seattle Times) on guitar and theorbo, and the renowned Joanna Blendulf on viola da gamba.
